  1. Notify DLM Dashboard of a release

    Suggested by Paul Munkenbeck

DLM Dashboard allows users to detect and act on drift as it occurs in a given environment (e.g. if a DBA adds an index to a table without going through source control).

Get ReadyRoll to notify DLM Dashboard of a release (e.g. during TeamCity or TFS build) so it is not erroneously detected as a drift.

    • Include icon overlays in Visual Studio for objects pending deployment

The Messages tab on the Error List pane show which local objects are pending deployment, but this isn't intuitive - they are not errors. The only other way to see this information that I can see is to open each object, which provides the 'Script Status' overlay.

It would be useful to have icon overlays in the Solution Explorer to show the status of each object, similar to how source control plug-ins show whether an icon is up to date, changed locally, conflicted, etc.

      • Deploy specific version of project to target environment

From AlexMBanks (posted on the product forum: https://forum.red-gate.com/discussion/81494/can-i-deploy-a-specific-version-of-my-readyroll-project )

If I have multiple SemVer folders in my project for different releases (say, 1.0.0, 2.0.0, 3.0.0), is it possible to deploy a specific version? For example, if we think a bug might be present in v2 but not v3, we may want to deploy both to compare and test.

The only workaround I can think of would be to check out the correct revisions from source control (easier if tagged, but they may not be), then build packages for each and deploy those. But it's not very convenient, especially as the…

        • Script Dml Triggers separately to the parent Table

Currently, whenever a table is select for import, DML triggers attached that table will be included in the generated script. In some circumstances, it may be desirable to handle the importing of DML triggers independently of the table, e.g. to allow specific triggers to be excluded with the ExcludeObjectsFromImport project setting.

Additionally, when writing to the Offline Schema Model (Schema-Model project sub folder), ReadyRoll currently stores the DML triggers within the table definition, whereas this type of object would be more appropriately handled as a Programmable Object.

The current limitation that is preventing this from being implemented is that the…

          • Provide a basic DLM Dashboard database state API

In order to enforce integrated process controls, some way to access the status of a database in DLM Dashboard is necessary for users that do not use Octopus Deploy.

One simple approach would be to provide a REST API that returns the status (acknowledged, updated, or drift) of a database, given a server\instance and database or pipeline and environment. Getting the version number and comments and acknowledgment username & datetime would also be nice, but not required.

Providing this info within a database (maybe within the database being tracked) would also provide very reasonable access to this info.

            • Make the Default Connection String a user rather than project setting

The Default Connection String belongs to the user and should not travel with the project through source control to other users/developers. This is where the shadow DB is kept and should be private to the user.

Not all developers can use localdb, firstly as this doesn't support SQL Server Enterprise features and secondly their localdb may be configured differently.

Therefore, each developer should be able to set and maintain their own Default Connection String.

The solution is simple, move this from the .sqlproj to .sqlproj.user file which does not/should not be checked in to source control.

              • Linked-file support in project system

Currently ReadyRoll does not support the Visual Studio convention of linking files from another project. This can be useful when attempting to re-use code across multiple projects.

The current workaround is to add a pre-build step to copy such files from one project to another. However this introduces the possibility of the wrong file being edited by the developer at design time, and any changes subsequently being overwritten at build time.

                  • Filter ReadyRoll DBSync window to selected/checked rows prior to "Import and Generate Scripts"

Prior to importing scripts, it would be great to be able to filter the list of objects in the ReadyRoll DBSync window to only selected/checked lines. This allows me to sanity check my selection prior to hitting "Import and Generate Scripts".

                    • Import database-level collation setting into project

Currently the collation in the project must be set manually by editing the "Pre-Deployment\01_CreateDatabase.sql" file, e.g.

                      CREATE DATABASE [$(DatabaseName)] COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CS_AS;

The DbSync tool should be able to detect and script the collation of the target db automatically during the initial import.

                      • Static data filtering: allow data to be excluded from import

Currently, ReadyRoll's "online" editing workflow only supports working with an entire table of static data. However, there is sometimes a requirement to be able to source control just a subset of rows within a table.

The current workaround is to use the "offline" approach instead, as outlined in the documentation: https://documentation.red-gate.com/display/RR1/Static+Data

However a solution may be available within the engine that ReadyRoll uses: as we use SQL Data Compare, and it supports the inclusion WHERE clauses at the table level, we may be able to expose this through the ReadyRoll project config.

                        • Create Chocolatey package for installing and updating ReadyRoll installations

Currently VS displays a notification when there is a new version of ReadyRoll. However, unfortunately, the update can't run inside of VS and instead a web page is opened with a link to download the new version of ReadyRoll. Instead of manually downloading and installing new versions it would be handy if there was a Chocolatey package for ReadyRoll which would allow for auto installation and updates.

Additionally, it would be useful to be able to pass in the server name that the linked server points to, e.g. using a SQLCMD variable. A change to the variable value should cause the linked server script to be re-deployed.

                                  • Add "Mark as Deployed" to context menu

When importing an existing database into a new ReadyRoll project, I have to open each file and click "Mark as Deployed" to let ReadyRoll know that I don't want to re-deploy the objects. This is very time-consuming when your database contains 100s of stored procedures and you've enabled the "Import into separate script files" option for easier source control merging.

                                    • Live updater API that can be shipped with a product upgrade

For upgrading on-premise versions of a product that may or may not have customizations. Having the comparison tool built into the setupkit and doing a live synchronization would be allot more flexible (like a merge tool) than just trusting on static upgrade scripts.

                                      • Allow comparison script generation options to be set through project properties

In addition to the options displayed within the project designer, ReadyRoll supports a set of "hidden" options that allow fine-grained control of script generation behavior within your project file (.sqlproj). Read more about this in the ReadyRoll documentation:
                                        https://documentation.red-gate.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=42539778

To make these options more accessible, Ted Williamson has suggested that these options be exposed within the UI (e.g. by the ReadyRoll project properties user interface).

                                        • Perform SQL deployment from embedded resource (e.g. during application startup)

Dale Shaw posted the following suggestion on the ReadyRoll forums:

"When building an update I would prefer to build the update so that:

                                          - The SQL is embedded inside the EXE / DLL rather than as a SQL file
                                          - The execute of the update is triggered by the startup of the application and under control of C# - not just a shell to SQLCMD"
