ReadyRoll - Product Feedback

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.

    • Allow comparison script generation options to be set through project properties

In addition to the options displayed within the project designer, ReadyRoll supports a set of "hidden" options that allow fine-grained control of script generation behavior within your project file (.sqlproj). Read more about this in the ReadyRoll documentation:
      https://documentation.red-gate.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=42539778

To make these options more accessible, Ted Williamson has suggested that these options be exposed within the UI (e.g. by the ReadyRoll project properties user interface).

      • Rollback support - Allow change "undo" logic to be included within migration scripts

ReadyRoll supports a type of rollback automation by way of a feature called Drift Correction, however there are limitations to this.

ReadyRoll should support custom-written roll back scripts (which would be included alongside the roll-forward script).

        • Static data filtering: allow data to be excluded from import

Currently, ReadyRoll's "online" editing workflow only supports working with an entire table of static data. However, there is sometimes a requirement to be able to source control just a subset of rows within a table.

The current workaround is to use the "offline" approach instead, as outlined in the documentation: https://documentation.red-gate.com/display/RR1/Static+Data

However a solution may be available within the engine that ReadyRoll uses: as we use SQL Data Compare, and it supports the inclusion WHERE clauses at the table level, we may be able to expose this through the ReadyRoll project config.

              • Limit DbSync compare to a single schema

Many teams have multiple applications in a single database, separated by security schema.

                Database1
                -Application1.Table1
                -Application1.Table2
                -Application2.AnotherTable

DbSync currently works at the database level meaning it tracks changes across multiple applications in this case. We'd like an option to limit the DbSync compare to a single schema so we can have a single database per readyroll database project.

                • Script Dml Triggers separately to the parent Table

Currently, whenever a table is select for import, DML triggers attached that table will be included in the generated script. In some circumstances, it may be desirable to handle the importing of DML triggers independently of the table, e.g. to allow specific triggers to be excluded with the ExcludeObjectsFromImport project setting.

Additionally, when writing to the Offline Schema Model (Schema-Model project sub folder), ReadyRoll currently stores the DML triggers within the table definition, whereas this type of object would be more appropriately handled as a Programmable Object.

The current limitation that is preventing this from being implemented is that the…

                  • Perform SQL deployment from embedded resource (e.g. during application startup)

Dale Shaw posted the following suggestion on the ReadyRoll forums:

"When building an update I would prefer to build the update so that:

                    - The SQL is embedded inside the EXE / DLL rather than as a SQL file
                    - The execute of the update is triggered by the startup of the application and under control of C# - not just a shell to SQLCMD"

                      • Reduce number of merge conflicts in .sqlproj file

Currently, when a migration gets added to a project, the .sqlproj file is modified to include the additional script.

This means that, when two developers author a schema change and generate a migration in parallel, a merge conflict is raised in the user's source control tool.

It would be good to remove the friction from this process by not needing to add individual files to the .sqlproj file.

(Side note: From an implementation point of view, using wildcards in the project file, e.g. *.sql proj, is currently not possible in Visual Studio, so we'd need to find a different way…

                        • "Restore from Backup" deployment (instead of deploying from scripts)

                          Suggested by Taliesin Sisson.

The idea is that you can deploy a database at a particular baseline straight from a .bak file when working within Visual Studio, negating the need for time-consuming data population scripts to be run after the initial database deployment.

Taliesin also suggests that this could be useful for managing environments used for testing feature branches: after a sprint when the database state needs to be reverted, instead of dropping and re-creating the database from scratch, ReadyRoll could restore an appropriate backup and apply any pending migrations as part of the database deployment.

                          • Linked Server support

Ability to automatically import Linked Server objects from the target database server into "additional scripts" folders (https://documentation.red-gate.com/display/RR1/Additional+Scripts)

Additionally, it would be useful to be able to pass in the server name that the linked server points to, e.g. using a SQLCMD variable. A change to the variable value should cause the linked server script to be re-deployed.

                            • Synchronize transactional data as part of migrations

ReadyRoll already has a feature that allows data to be synchronized into Deploy-Once migrations, however this more suited to "static" data due to the following factors:
                              - Transactional data would generally be environment specific; i.e. used as a means of generating scripts seeding test environments with data
                              - Large data sets cannot currently be displayed in the side-by-side diff, and there are some issues with scripting very large data sets

ReadyRoll would need to be able to handle such data requirements, including the ability to specify that certain tables should be scripted based on specific project conditions (e.g. '$(Environment)' =…

                              • Make the Default Connection String a user rather than project setting

The Default Connection String belongs to the user and should not travel with the project through source control to other users/developers. This is where the shadow DB is kept and should be private to the user.

Not all developers can use localdb, firstly as this doesn't support SQL Server Enterprise features and secondly their localdb may be configured differently.

Therefore, each developer should be able to set and maintain their own Default Connection String.

The solution is simple, move this from the .sqlproj to .sqlproj.user file which does not/should not be checked in to source control.

                                    • Linked-file support in project system

Currently ReadyRoll does not support the Visual Studio convention of linking files from another project. This can be useful when attempting to re-use code across multiple projects.

The current workaround is to add a pre-build step to copy such files from one project to another. However this introduces the possibility of the wrong file being edited by the developer at design time, and any changes subsequently being overwritten at build time.

                                        • Introduce tSQLt/Database Unit Testing support

Currently, ReadyRoll can only be integrated with a database unit testing framework like tSQLt through a series of workarounds.

Introducing first-class support for tSQLt would need to take the following into consideration:

                                          * Authoring and execution of tests in Visual Studio
                                          * Execution of tests within Continuous Integration
                                          * Exclusion of tSQLt-related objects during deployments to lifecycle environments (QA/Staging/Prod)
